The implication of intestinal bacterial translocation in central line associated blood stream infections in the pediatric population
Topic overview
Retrospective study of 117 pediatric CLABSI cases found that coagulase-negative staphylococcus was significantly more common in patients undergoing gastrointestinal surgery (58%) compared to other surgical or non-surgical patients, suggesting intestinal bacterial translocation as a key mechanism. Findings inform targeted infection prevention strategies for pediatric patients with central lines undergoing GI procedures.
