The role of surgical shunts in the treatment of pediatric portal hypertension.

Retrospective study of 34 pediatric patients undergoing surgical shunt procedures for portal hypertension demonstrates high efficacy with 66% five-year patency and low morbidity. Meso-Rex bypass was most common, with minimal complications and 3% mortality, supporting surgical shunts as effective treatment for medically refractory cases.
