Speaker: Dr. Pramod P. Reddy, MD, of Cincinnati Children’s explains pediatric bladder outlet obstruction
These are some images of a fetus that has a diagnosis of bladder outlet obstruction that was detected at about 20 weeks of pregnancy. And you can see that big white balloon in the middle, and that is the baby's bladder, and you can see that there's very little white around the baby. So on an MRI, and this is a fetal MRI, on an MRI, urine or fluid around the baby would appear white. So normally you should see a nice layer of white surrounding the baby all the way around. We don't see that, and that's because the baby's bladder is obstructed by the valves and there's no urine being excreted from the bladder, and so it's preventing the amniotic fluid from being repopulated. And as a result we have damage to the lungs, damage to the long bones, and because of the back pressure from the bladder, damage to the kidneys.
