Topic overview

We report the use of pediatric compact cystoscope as rigid ventilating bronchoscope for the diagnosis and cannulation of H type congenital tracheoesophageal fistula (H-TEF) in small babies. H-TEF is a rare anomaly which can be difficult to diagnose by standard esophagography; Most pediatric surgeons utilise rigid bronchoscopy as the most sensitive method for the diagnosis of H-TEF [1–3]; Rigid bronchoscopy allows simultaneous ventilation which oxygenates the child and keeps the trachea open for more accurate examination and diagnosis; it also permits accurate localisation of the level of the fistula, and allows cannulation of the fistula with a fine catheter to help in identification and isolation of the fistula during the surgery for H-TEF repair [1,2].
