Imaging of the intrahepatic portal vein in children with extrahepatic portal vein thrombosis — Comparison of magnetic resonance imaging and retrograde portography

Comparative study of MRI versus retrograde portography for assessing intrahepatic portal vein patency in 16 children with extrahepatic portal vein thrombosis found MRI had only 56% diagnostic accuracy due to difficulty differentiating collaterals and poor spatial resolution. Authors recommend combined approach using retrograde portography for intrahepatic assessment and MRI for extrahepatic vessels in preoperative planning for Rex shunt procedures.
