Topic overview
We read with interest the article entitled “Open tunneled central line insertion in children — External or internal jugular vein?” that was authored by Alshafei et al. and published in the Journal of Pediatric Surgery [1]. The article reported the results of 942 cases of tunneled central venous catheter (TCVC) insertion (690 internal jugular veins [IJVs] and 252 external jugular veins [EJVs]) by the open technique and concluded that the EJV is superior to the IJV as an entry site for TCVC insertion in terms of safety, speed of procedure, and postprocedure morbidity.
