Complicated Gastroschisis Is Associated with Greater Intestinal Morbidity than Gastroschisis or Intestinal Atresia Alone

Retrospective study of 68 patients demonstrates that gastroschisis complicated by intestinal atresia or perforation results in significantly worse outcomes than isolated gastroschisis or intestinal atresia alone, including longer ventilation, hospital stays, and parenteral nutrition duration. Complicated cases required more reoperations and all patients needing repeat bowel reconstruction had complicated gastroschisis.
