Attempting to trace the origins of circumcision

Topic overview
The trouble with attempting to trace the origins of circumcision, as your correspondents have tried [1–3], is that it is lost in prehistory, evidence is scant and open to interpretation, and it may have had more than one point of origin and for more than one purpose. For this reason it is a topic I generally steer clear of, regarding it as irrelevant to modern justifications, which should be evidence-based to have any validity.
