Complication accrual impacts pediatric extracorporeal life support mortality
Topic overview
Retrospective analysis of 114 neonatal and pediatric ECLS patients demonstrates that complication accrual during support significantly increases mortality risk independent of pre-cannulation factors. Patients experiencing complications required longer ECLS duration and had higher rates of death or withdrawal, suggesting targeted quality improvement by multidisciplinary teams could enhance survival outcomes.
