Behind the mask: extended use of surgical masks is not associated with increased risk of surgical site infection

Retrospective study of 488 pediatric surgery cases comparing standard vs. extended surgical mask use during COVID-19 found no increase in 30-day surgical site infections. Extended mask use (one disposable mask per provider per day) proved safe and effective for PPE conservation without compromising patient outcomes.
