The clinical impact of extrathyroidal extensions on prognoses in pediatric differentiated thyroid cancers

This retrospective study of 89 pediatric papillary thyroid carcinoma patients demonstrates that both microscopic and gross extrathyroidal extension significantly worsen recurrence-free and distant metastasis-free survival. The findings suggest current ATA pediatric guidelines should be revised to classify microscopic ETE as intermediate-risk and gross ETE as high-risk.
