Fecal microbiome alterations in pediatric patients with short bowel syndrome receiving a rotating cycle of gastrointestinal prophylactic antibiotics

Study using 16S sequencing reveals cyclic prophylactic antibiotics (metronidazole alternating with TMP-SMX) unfavorably alter gut microbiota in pediatric short bowel syndrome patients, increasing Proteobacteria and E. coli while reducing beneficial Firmicutes compared to healthy controls. Findings question the long-term use of rotating antibiotics for SIBO prevention.
