The morphological and histopathological assessment of Alagille syndrome with extrahepatic bile duct obstruction: the importance of the differential diagnosis with subgroup “o” biliary atresia

Case series of six pediatric patients initially diagnosed with biliary atresia who were later confirmed to have Alagille syndrome with extrahepatic bile duct obstruction through genetic analysis. Key distinguishing features include hepatic duct aplasia (subgroup 'o'), smooth non-cirrhotic liver surface, and preserved common bile duct—critical diagnostic markers for differentiating these conditions before liver transplantation.
