Early definitive operation for patients with anorectal malformation was associated with a better long-term postoperative bowel function

Retrospective study of 52 male patients demonstrates that early anorectoplasty (before 5 months) for high- and intermediate-type anorectal malformations results in superior long-term bowel function compared to later surgery. Patients operated early showed significantly better constipation scores and overall continence at 11 years follow-up.
