Long-term outcome following cholecystocolostomy in 41 patients with progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis

This retrospective study of 41 PFIC patients demonstrates that cholecystocolostomy achieves 81% transplant-free survival in non-cirrhotic patients, with 83% becoming medication-free post-operatively. The procedure effectively interrupts enterohepatic circulation to relieve cholestasis, though success requires vigilant management of constipation and ascending cholangitis to prevent cystic duct stenosis.
