Risk for deep venous thrombosis in pediatric cancer patients undergoing surgery
Topic overview
Retrospective analysis of 3,031 major oncologic operations in pediatric cancer patients found only 14 symptomatic DVTs (0.46% incidence) within 30 days post-operatively. The low perioperative DVT rate suggests routine pharmacologic prophylaxis may not be warranted for this population undergoing surgery.
