The incidence of abdominal surgical site infections after abdominal birth defects surgery in infants: A systematic review with meta-analysis

Systematic review of 154 studies finds surgical site infections occur in 6% of infants after abdominal birth defect repair, with rates varying by defect type from 1% (choledochal cyst) to 10% (gastroschisis). Complications include wound infection, dehiscence, anastomotic leakage, peritonitis, and fistula formation.
