Additional prophylactic antibiotics do not decrease surgical site infection rates in pediatric patients with appendicitis and cholecystitis

Retrospective study of 363 pediatric patients undergoing appendectomy or cholecystectomy found no reduction in surgical site infections when additional prophylactic antibiotics were given to patients already receiving treatment antibiotics for acute intraabdominal infection. Findings suggest antibiotic stewardship opportunities in this population without compromising infection outcomes.
