When to Take it Out? Optimal Timing of Interval Appendectomy in 500 Consecutive Children

Retrospective study of 500 pediatric interval appendectomies found that operating before 12 weeks post-perforation doubles the risk of encountering acute inflammation, which increases operative time. Only 11% had occluded lumens and 1.2% had carcinoid tumors, suggesting delayed timing may optimize surgical conditions.
