Enema-Induced Spastic Left Colon Syndrome: An Unintended Consequence of Chronic Enema Use
Topic overview
Chronic enema use in 22 patients with fecal incontinence (average 13.7 years) caused severe right colon dilatation and left colon spasm, producing progressive colicky pain and delayed transit. This previously unreported complication occurred across multiple enema formulations and underlying diagnoses including anorectal malformations and myelomeningocele.
