The risk of COVID-19 transmission by laparoscopic smoke may be lower than for laparotomy: a narrative review

Narrative review challenges early pandemic guidelines that recommended avoiding laparoscopy due to COVID-19 transmission concerns. Analysis of 50 studies found no evidence of SARS-CoV-2 in surgical smoke, and laparoscopy's closed-cavity containment may actually offer superior protection compared to open surgery when proper smoke evacuation is used.
