Vesicoureteral reflux increases the risk of urinary tract infection prior to corrective surgery in newborn males with anorectal malformation

Retrospective study of 80 newborn males with anorectal malformation shows vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) is the primary risk factor for febrile UTI prior to corrective surgery (OR 17.3), independent of colostomy type. Authors recommend routine voiding cystourethrography screening and antibiotic prophylaxis in ARM patients to identify and manage VUR early.
