Improving care through standardized treatment of spontaneous pneumothorax

Implementation of an evidence-based treatment protocol for primary spontaneous pneumothorax reduced hospital length of stay from 4.5 to 2.9 days, decreased X-ray utilization by 33%, and cut CT scan rates from 45% to 15%, saving $1,322 per admission without increasing 30-day recurrence rates.
