Hypocalcemia prevention and management after thyroidectomy in children: A systematic review

Systematic review of 1552 pediatric thyroidectomy patients found 35.5% developed transient hypocalcemia and 4.2% permanent hypocalcemia, yet no standardized prevention or management protocols exist for children. Current practice shows significant variation, with most requiring hospital admission for IV calcium despite lack of evidence-based guidelines specific to pediatric populations.
