Systematic review of mortality associated with neonatal primary staged closure of giant omphalocele

Systematic review examining mortality rates in neonates undergoing primary staged closure for giant omphalocele across 13 studies (94 patients total, 1985-2018). Overall mortality was 18.8% in cross-sectional studies and 11.1% in case reports, with deaths primarily due to cardiac, respiratory, and multi-organ complications. High survival rates and low complication rates suggest staged closure is an effective and safe approach for this complex congenital defect.
