Severity of complications following restorative proctocolectomy in children is related to staging not diagnosis

Prospective study of 128 children undergoing restorative proctocolectomy found that complication severity correlates with surgical staging approach rather than underlying diagnosis. Two-stage proctocolectomy carried significantly higher major complication rates (24%) compared to three-stage procedures with separate colectomy and proctectomy steps (7-13%).
