Biliary Atresia Patients With Successful Kasai Portoenterostomy Can Present With Features of Obliterative Portal Venopathy

Study of 14 biliary atresia patients with successful Kasai procedures found that 79% developed obliterative portal venopathy features including portal vein stenosis and nodular transformation, despite normalized bilirubin. Findings suggest portal hypertension in these patients may result from vascular abnormalities rather than advanced fibrosis, warranting investigation of portal vein pathology in BA management.
