Nosocomial Infection Following Severe Traumatic Injury in Children
Topic overview
This retrospective study of 203 critically injured children found that patients with polytrauma combined with traumatic brain injury had significantly higher nosocomial infection rates (30%) compared to isolated TBI (6%) or trauma without TBI (9%). The findings suggest polytrauma with TBI represents a distinct high-risk population requiring enhanced infection prevention strategies in the PICU.
