Transesophageal echocardiography during pectus excavatum correction in children: What happens to the heart?
Topic overview
This prospective study of 20 pediatric pectus excavatum patients demonstrates that intraoperative transesophageal echocardiography reveals universal right heart compression missed by preoperative resting transthoracic echo. Surgical correction significantly improves right atrium, ventricle, and tricuspid annulus dimensions, with 4D imaging showing normalization of tricuspid morphology.
