Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation Support for Pediatric Burn Patients: Is It Worth the Risk?

This retrospective study of 113 pediatric burn patients requiring ECMO support found 55.7% survival for respiratory failure cases, with venovenous ECMO achieving 62.2% survival. Surgical site bleeding rates were comparable to other ECMO populations at 22.1%, and survival reached 70% when burns involved less than 60% total body surface area.
