Outcome of initially nonoperative treatment for acute simple appendicitis in children

Prospective study of 44 children with simple appendicitis comparing initial nonoperative treatment versus immediate appendectomy. Complication rates were similar between groups (12% vs 11%), and nonoperative management avoided appendectomy in 76% of patients at median 25-month follow-up with preserved quality of life.
