BACKGROUND: Early diagnosis of necrotising enterocolitis (NEC) may improve prognosis but there are no proven biomarkers.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate changes in faecal volatile organic compounds (VOCs) as potential biomarkers for NEC. DESIGN: Multicentre prospective study.
SETTINGS: 8 UK neonatal units.
