Children are at a High Risk of Hypocalcaemia and Hypoparathyroidism after Total Thyroidectomy

Study of 106 children undergoing total thyroidectomy shows 59.4% developed hypocalcemia within 24 hours and 21.7% had persistent hypoparathyroidism at 6 months. Preserving all four parathyroid glands in situ significantly reduced calcium-related complications across all timepoints.
