Evaluation of a water-soluble contrast protocol for nonoperative management of pediatric adhesive small bowel obstruction

This retrospective study demonstrates that early administration of water-soluble contrast in pediatric adhesive small bowel obstruction reduced surgical intervention rates from 45% to 17% while decreasing costs by nearly $9,000 per admission. The protocol showed 100% sensitivity and 90% specificity in predicting obstruction resolution.
