Dr. Boles was born in Cleveland, Ohio, but grew up in Upper Arlington, which is a suburb of Columbus, Ohio. After high school Tom attended The Ohio State University for 2 years but finished college at William and Mary, Phi Beta Kappa. As an undergrad he was a stalwart on the swim team, the editor of his college yearbook, and a member of Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity. He then attended Harvard Medical School, where he received his MD degree, Cum Laude, in 1945. He interned at St. Luke's Hospital in New York from 1945 to 1946 and spent the next 2 years in Japan as a member of the U.S.
