Invited commentary on Li et al: Laparoscopic simultaneous inguinal hernia repair and appendectomy in children: A multicenter study

The aim of the study by Li et al was to evaluate children with acute appendicitis and patent processus vaginalis and compare simultaneous appendectomy and repair of patent processus vaginalis with a two-stage laparoscopic procedure with respect to incidence rate of wound infection or recurrent hernia. Whether the child should undergo a simultaneous or a two-stage procedure was decided by the surgeon and the patient's parents. If the processus vaginalis was at least 2 cm deep it was recommended that it should be closed.
