Letter to the Editor in response to: Routine evaluation of vesicle-ureteric reflux in children with anorectal malformation does not reduce the rate of urinary tract infection

We are writing in response to ‘Routine evaluation of vesico-ureteric reflux in children with anorectal malformation does not reduce the rate of urinary tract infection’ [1] after review of the article in our journal club. Firstly, we thank our colleagues for reporting their experience of urological anomalies associated with anorectal malformations (ARM). In particular, we value the size of the patient group, the multicentre working, and the methodological statistical analysis of their results. We do, however, have concerns that the authors’ conclusion that ‘MCUG does not reduce the risk of UTI in children with ARM’ may dissuade some from using early or routine MCUG, which in our opinion adds value beyond the diagnosis of VUR.
