What the experts said
A new index exists to measure the extent of sternal depression in pectus excavatum.
The study was a retrospective study conducted at Clínica Mipetus, Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Patients underwent minimally invasive repair of pectus excavatum between June 2020 and April 2022.
The new index is called the Titanic Index.
The Titanic Index evaluates the percentage of sternum located posterior to the anterior costal line on computed tomography.
The index measures the craniocaudal extent of the depressed sternum.
The study included 78 patients.
The Haller index, correction index, and Titanic Index were measured in all patients.
Patients were divided into two groups based on the number of implants placed.
Group A received only two implants and comprised 47% of patients.
Group B received three or more implants and comprised 53% of patients.
A Titanic Index greater than 66% has a sensitivity of 93% for predicting the need for more than two implants.
A Titanic Index greater than 66% has a specificity of 92% for predicting the need for more than two implants.
The Titanic Index is a better predictor of the number of implants needed than the Haller index or the correction index.
