In brief

In brief

This multicenter study evaluates a standardized quantified ICG fluorescence imaging technique to assess parathyroid gland perfusion during pediatric thyroid surgery. The goal is to reduce postoperative hypocalcemia in children, who face more severe long-term consequences than adults from parathyroid injury.

  • ICG fluorescence imaging reduces postoperative hypocalcemia risk in adults undergoing thyroid/parathyroid surgery
  • Children face more severe long-term consequences from postoperative hypocalcemia than adults
  • Standardized quantified ICG imaging model previously validated in adults is now being tested in pediatric populations
  • Real-time parathyroid perfusion assessment may prevent inadvertent gland devascularization during pediatric neck surgery

Intraoperative fluorescence imaging with Indocyanine Green (ICG) shows promising results in reducing postoperative hypocalcemia in adults. Recently, we developed a standardized intraoperative model for quantified ICG fluorescence imaging in adults. This technique could also be relevant for children, as they face the highest prolonged consequences of postoperative hypocalcemia. The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility and reproducibility of quantified ICG fluorescence imaging of parathyroid gland perfusion in children using a standardized intraoperative model.
