In brief

In brief

This cohort study examines clinical presentations, diagnostic approaches, and treatment outcomes in pediatric abdominal tuberculosis. While medical therapy shows good response rates, surgical intervention for complications like obstruction and perforation carries significant morbidity, highlighting the need for early diagnosis and identification of risk factors for poor outcomes in children.

  • Abdominal TB in children requires high clinical suspicion plus multiple diagnostic modalities for accurate diagnosis.
  • Medical therapy shows good response rates in pediatric abdominal TB when initiated appropriately.
  • Surgical complications (obstruction, perforation) carry significant morbidity in pediatric abdominal TB cases.
  • Evidence gaps exist regarding optimal treatment regimens and prognostic factors in pediatric abdominal TB.

Abdominal tuberculosis presents in a variety of ways. Different testing modalities must be applied in addition to having a high clinical suspicion to diagnose and initiate therapy. Medications have a good response; however, morbidity has been seen following surgical management of complicated presentations like intestinal obstruction and perforation. There is a paucity of studies in the pediatric age group which evaluate response to the different treatment regimen and identify factors associated with poorer outcomes in children with abdominal tuberculosis.
