In brief
This opinion piece examines whether pediatric surgeons should engage in public discourse through op-eds to influence healthcare policy. The author explores the tension between clinical expertise and public advocacy, considering both the potential impact on child health outcomes and the risks of entering politically charged debates.
- Pediatric surgeons witness healthcare policy failures firsthand and have unique insights into their impact on children's lives.
- Writing op-eds allows surgeons to translate clinical experience into public discourse on healthcare policy affecting pediatric patients.
- Entering public forums involves weighing professional expertise against risks of being perceived as stepping outside clinical roles.
- As politics increasingly shapes healthcare delivery, surgeon advocacy through op-eds may influence policy decisions benefiting children.
- The decision to write op-eds is personal but merits consideration given surgeons' frontline perspective on policy consequences.

We often witness firsthand the consequences of failed healthcare policies but are also able to intervene and alter the course of many children's lives. As the political climate increasingly influences healthcare, a provocative question arises: Should we, as pediatric surgeons, voice our opinions in public forums such as opinion editorials (op-eds)? For some, entering this realm of public discourse feels natural, while others are hesitant about stepping into the politically charged arena. While it is ultimately a personal choice whether to express one's views publicly, it's worth considering the potential value of op-eds and weighing them against the risks associated with stepping beyond what some perceive as our "lanes" [1].
