In brief

In brief

This propensity-matched study compares 1-minute versus 2-minute cryoanalgesia freeze cycles during minimally invasive pectus excavatum repair to determine optimal pain control while minimizing operative time. The research addresses whether shorter cryoanalgesia duration maintains equivalent analgesic efficacy and opioid reduction in MIRPE patients.

  • Thoracoscopic cryoanalgesia during MIRPE reduces opioid use and shortens hospital stays but extends operative time
  • Optimal cryoanalgesia freeze duration was previously undefined, prompting protocol evaluation
  • Institution shifted from 2-minute to 1-minute cryoanalgesia cycles in December 2024 to reduce operative time
  • Propensity score matching used to compare clinical effectiveness of 1-minute versus 2-minute freeze protocols
  • Study addresses whether shorter cryoanalgesia cycles maintain pain control benefits while improving surgical efficiency

Thoracoscopic cryoanalgesia reduces opioid requirements and hospital stay after minimally invasive repair of pectus excavatum (MIRPE), but increases operative time. Since the optimal freeze duration remains undefined, our protocol changed from 2-minute to 1-minute cycles in December 2024. Thus, we aimed to compare the effectiveness of 1-minute vs 2-minute cryoanalgesia cycles in MIRPE patients.
