In brief

This study examines patterns of surgical procedures performed in seriously ill children receiving palliative care, tracking interventions from diagnosis onward. The research identifies which surgical specialties are involved and characterizes intervention types across different serious illness categories in the pediatric palliative population.

  • Surgical interventions are common in seriously ill children receiving palliative care, yet data on procedure types by diagnosis remains limited.
  • Understanding surgical trajectories from diagnosis onward helps identify patterns of care and specialist involvement in pediatric palliative populations.
  • Mapping which surgical specialists perform procedures in this cohort can inform multidisciplinary care coordination and resource planning.
