In brief

This letter discusses a prospective study evaluating subclavian central venous catheterization without ultrasound guidance in pediatric patients. The commentary addresses the safety and efficacy of landmark-based techniques for central venous access in children and adolescents within standardized protocols.

  • Subclavian venous access without ultrasound guidance can be safe in pediatric patients when performed within standardized protocols.
  • Large prospective cohorts provide valuable evidence for evaluating central line placement techniques in children and young adults.
  • Standardized perioperative protocols are critical for optimizing safety outcomes in pediatric central venous catheterization.

We read with great interest the recent article by Mayon et al. reporting that subclavian central venous access without ultrasound (US) guidance is “safe and effective” in children and adolescents and young adults [1]. The authors are to be commended for presenting a large, prospective cohort within a standardized perioperative protocol.
