In brief

This article explores the dual nature of generative AI tools like ChatGPT in medical writing, weighing benefits such as improved manuscript quality and global accessibility against risks of scientific inaccuracy when human oversight falters. The discussion is particularly relevant for pediatric surgery publications navigating this emerging technology.

  • Large Language Models like ChatGPT are now permanent fixtures in medical writing since their 2022 introduction.
  • AI can improve manuscript quality by enhancing clarity and conciseness, potentially expanding global authorship opportunities.
  • Risk of scientific misconduct exists if authors fail to rigorously verify AI-generated content for accuracy and honesty.
  • Human oversight remains critical—forensic review of AI output is essential to maintain scientific integrity.
  • The debate isn't whether to use AI in medical writing, but how to use it responsibly and ethically.

But the potential for scientific misadventure is there, especially if its human overseers lose interest in forensic examination of the final product for reality, honesty and accuracy.
