In brief
This study examines discrepancies between community/adult radiologist CT interpretations and pediatric radiology overreads for injured children transferred to a Level I trauma center. The research assesses whether routine secondary review by pediatric radiologists remains clinically necessary for transferred trauma patients.
- Outside CT interpretations for pediatric trauma often differ from pediatric radiologist overreads at tertiary centers.
- Level I pediatric trauma centers routinely reinterpret all transferred imaging studies with pediatric radiology expertise.
- Discordance rates between community/adult radiologists and pediatric radiologists justify continued secondary review protocols.
- Pediatric-specific imaging interpretation may identify missed findings or prevent overtreatment in trauma cases.
- Standardized overread processes are essential for quality assurance in pediatric trauma imaging.

For pediatric trauma patients, imaging interpretations from transferring institutions may differ from those of pediatric radiologists. At our Level I pediatric trauma center, all outside CT scans are reinterpreted by pediatric radiologists. This study evaluates the discordance rate between initial outside CT interpretations and pediatric overreads, examining whether continued secondary review is needed.
