In brief
In brief
This report demonstrates accessible, low-cost techniques for converting CT/MRI scans into 3D anatomic models for pediatric surgical cases. The methods enable surgeons in resource-limited settings to visualize complex congenital anomalies and improve preoperative planning without expensive commercial software.
- 3D anatomic models aid preoperative planning in complex pediatric congenital anomalies by improving spatial understanding.
- Commercial 3D modeling services exist but cost and complexity limit adoption in resource-constrained centers.
- Low-cost, reproducible methods can generate 3D models from cross-sectional imaging (CT/MRI) for education and surgical planning.
- Open-source or affordable software tools enable in-house creation of patient-specific 3D anatomic models.
- 3D visualization enhances communication with families and trainees when explaining complex pediatric surgical anatomy.
Written by the GCMD Library team from the article.
Pediatric surgery patients often present with complex congenital anomalies or other conditions requiring deep understanding of their intricate anatomy. Commercial applications and services exist for the conversion of cross-sectional imaging data into three-dimensional (3D) models for education and preoperative planning. However, the associated costs and lack of familiarity may discourage their use in centers with limited resources. The purpose of this report is to present a low-cost, reproducible method for generating 3D images to visualize patient anatomy.
