In brief

In brief

This study evaluates the necessity of annual renal ultrasound screening in all children with anorectal malformations, questioning whether aggressive surveillance protocols are warranted regardless of symptom presentation or malformation complexity. The research examines outcomes to determine if current screening practices could be refined.

  • Children with anorectal malformations have increased risk of congenital renal anomalies requiring screening protocols.
  • Current practice of annual renal ultrasounds for all ARM patients regardless of symptoms may be more aggressive than necessary.
  • Study questions the clinical utility and cost-effectiveness of universal annual ultrasound surveillance in this population.
  • Screening protocols may need stratification based on ARM complexity rather than blanket annual imaging for all patients.

Children with anorectal malformations (ARMs) are at risk of renal anomalies. Therefore, we obtain annual renal ultrasounds (RUS) regardless of symptoms or complexity. The utility of aggressive screening in all ARM is unknown. Thus, we aimed to determine outcomes in children with all ARM managed on this protocol.
