In brief

This study examines androgen receptor distribution in adult oral mucosa to assess its viability as graft material for pediatric hypospadias repair. A key question is whether oral mucosa grafts can grow proportionally during puberty through androgen-mediated signaling, which would impact long-term surgical outcomes in children.

  • Oral mucosa is widely used in urethroplasty but its growth potential during puberty in hypospadias repair remains unclear.
  • Androgen receptor presence in oral mucosa is critical to determine if grafts can grow proportionally with penile development.
  • Study maps AR localization in adult oral mucosa to assess androgen responsiveness for pediatric hypospadias applications.
  • Understanding AR distribution may guide optimal graft selection and timing for hypospadias reconstruction in children.

Hypospadias is a congenital defect of the urethra that often requires surgical correction. Oral mucosa (OM) is commonly used as a graft material in adult and pediatric urethroplasties (revised as suggested by Reviewer #3) , but its suitability for pediatric hypospadias surgery remains uncertain. A critical concern is whether OM grafts can grow proportionally with the penis during puberty, a process driven by androgen signaling. This study investigates androgen receptor (AR) localization and responsiveness in adult human OM to provide foundational insights for its potential clinical applications in hypospadias surgery.
