Association of Prophylactic Antibiotics With Early Infectious Complications in Children With Cancer Undergoing Central Venous Access Device Placement

Retrospective study of 9,216 pediatric cancer patients demonstrates that prophylactic antibiotics reduce early infectious complications after central venous access device placement, particularly for tunneled lines (OR 0.59). Findings challenge current guidelines recommending against routine antibiotic prophylaxis in this population.
